We thank you for taking the time to complete the recent AKC Mixed Breed
Program Survey. AKC conducted this survey of purebred dog fanciers in order to
gather opinions on the concept of allowing mixed breed dogs to compete in
certain AKC events. While much of the data is still being analyzed, the
preliminary results indicate a majority of support for continuing to explore
this program. Below we have summarized some demographic information on the
respondents. You may respond to this email if you have comments, suggestions,
questions, or other input. Please note that more details on the specific
survey results will be shared during the upcoming Delegates meeting on June
11th. Following that meeting, these additional results will be shared
with the fancy via the AKC web site and this email list.
Respondents:
- AKC Delegates – received via both hard copy and email
- AKC Club Presidents and Secretaries – received via email
- Other Fanciers – notified by their Club President, Secretary or via
akc.org
- In total over 21,000 people completed the survey (including paper and
email)
Respondent Demographics:
- 84% Purebred Dog Owners
- 70% Exhibitors
- 50% Club Member
- 76% now own, or have owned, a mixed breed dog
Sport Participation of Respondents:
- More than 50% have been involved in the sport for 16 or more years
- Over 60% currently compete in Conformation or have in the past
- Over 50% currently compete in Agility or have in the past
- Nearly 70% currently compete in Obedience or have in the past
Club Affiliation of Respondents:
- 51% belong to Specialty Clubs
- 34% belong to All-Breed Clubs
- 33% belong to Obedience Clubs
- 31% belonged to Agility Clubs
- 64% said that their club already offered at least some training classes
for mixed breed dogs
